Welcome to Metchosin ArtPod's  ONLINE GALLERY for the juried show...

AIR:

Exploring our place in the atmosphere

AIR: We invited artists to explore AIR in all its meanings and possibilities for this unique show! Can we both celebrate AIR as a fundamental life force while also communication its fragility?

The juror for this show is Samantha Dickie. Check out their work: on Instagram: @samantha.dickie.studio or Website: https://www.samanthadickie.com

The web gallery is where you can vote for your favourite piece in the show. At the end of the show's run, votes are tallied and a People's Choice Award is presented to the deserving winner!

This show also exists in real life in Metchosin, BC, Canada, at Metchosin ArtPod. We highly encourage you to come see it  in person during its run from April 4th 2025- May 25th 2025. People are always happy to have seen the show in person; it is quite a different experience from seeing it on-line.

**Note that ArtPod is open from 11am-4pm  from Fri-Sun.**

We welcome everyone to our  Opening Celebration on SATURDAY the 5th of April from 2pm tp 4pm. Meet our juror, and hear how she choose the works featured in this show,  listen to accepted artists in attendance speak about their works and process, and celebrate the 3 Juror's Choice Winners!

CA$900.00

Dimensions: 36 x 24 x 1.5
Inspiration:: It has taken me a package of Oreos and chocolate covered Easter eggs (too many to count) all consumed in one furious sitting to get through life recently. But I know the path to healing is not copious amounts of ketchup chips, but rather, hope. Hope is found only in the air filtered through the cedars and into my lungs. Hiking through these masters of serenity brings me back to a place of ‘Deliverance’ from the madness. In the movement of the wind, I return to living in the moment.
Materials and Process:: Acrylic. I explore movement by using many colours and repetition of fractured little lines

CA$5,500.00

Dimensions: 84 x 39 x 39
Inspiration:: This 1000 paper crane mobile is inspired by the symbolic meaning of the paper crane—representing peace, hope, and healing. Each crane, carefully folded by hand, carries a personal wish or moment of reflection. The process became a meditative act, allowing me to channel emotions like anxiety and uncertainty into something meaningful. The cranes vary in color and pattern, with subtle shifts in tone and texture, reflecting the complexity and uniqueness of human emotions. The 64 strings were thoughtfully curated to maintain harmony while celebrating the beauty in both repetition and variation. At 7 feet tall, this mobile serves as a symbol of resilience and transformation, reminding us of the power of art to heal and the strength found in patience.
Materials and Process:: Folded paper into cranes, strung them on yarn strings, glue to secure each bird, wood for the frame, spray painted the wood frame, cable and carabiner to hang.

MaryLou Wakefield
CA$2,150.00

Dimensions: 36 x 48 x 1.5
Inspiration:: This work on wood panel speaks to the effects of being in, and surviving a storm. For me, it is a metaphorical storm and it is my response to surviving my own storm after being inspired by a piece written by Haruki Murakami. “And once the storm is over, you won’t remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won’t even be sure the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s what this storm is all about.”
Materials and Process:: Built-up layers of ink, acrylic, and gestural writing on wood panel.
Los Paraguas de Bucerias
Los Paraguas de Bucerias
Linda Kirstein
CA$600.00

Dimensions: 36 x 36 x 1.5
Inspiration:: This artwork is a collaboration between six artists, Linda Kirstein, Linda Simrose, Linda Anderson, Elaine Hughes, Catherine Mottashed, and Bernadette Harding. The inspiration is a whimsical photograph by Linda Kirstein of umbrellas hung in the courtyard of a restaurant in Bucerias Mexico. The umbrellas protected waiting customers from the heat of the sun, but when it rained, water cascaded onto unwitting customers below! Air is an intangible element, we breathe it, but we tend to experience it from the sky above us, as sunshine, moonlight, wind, and precipitation. Our Paraguas de Bucerias are an example of air made tangible in a colorful way.
Materials and Process:: Acrylic on Canvas

Dimensions: 24 x 36 x 1.5
Inspiration:: Air is made up of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.95% argon and 0.05% carbon dioxide. In this diptych, each painting was made using these proportions as a limiting factor or 'prompt' and is a visual repsentation of air.
Materials and Process:: Oil and oil stick on canvas. $160 each or $306 for the pair.

Orb Weaver
Orb Weaver
Angela Menzies
CA$150.00

Dimensions: 8 x 8 x 1
Inspiration:: I tend to get a little repetitive on the topic of spiders as I wax lyrical about our lovely, brightly colored orb weavers, for I am a lover of spiders – an arachnophile, if you will. It’s hard not to feel affection for another creator as she deftly weaves intricate and lacy webs through the air, plucking her strings like a guitar. If I could hear this, would it be musical genius? I could easily wile away the hours in observant stillness in the company of spiders. Methods for using spider webs as passive air samplers have been developed over recent years. Chemicals and air pollutants caught in spider webs can determine the health of certain environments. The results show some of the impact humans are having on nature.
Materials and Process:: Lino block print, oil inks on cotton paper

Memet Burnett
CA$175.00

Dimensions: 16 x 12 x 12
Inspiration:: Rainbows, the love children of Rain, Sunshine, and Air were the inspiration for this small mobile sculpture. Mobiles make air visible and are calming and meditative to watch. So are rainbows.

Mid-Century Breeze Block Series
Mid-Century Breeze Block Series
Irene Ives
CA$375.00

Dimensions: 14 x 9 x 4
Inspiration:: The cement breeze block is a ubiquitous symbol of the mid-century modern aesthetic. Its form is a celebration of negative space and their tile-like geometric motifs provided the breezy privacy of the much celebrated indoor-outdoor lifestyle that emerged after WWII. While creating these nostalgic forms, I was also reminded that the generations that used them in their carports, gardens, breezeways and patios, are the same ones that are responsible for the greatest level of industry, consumerism and use of carbon-emitting fuels in history, leading to our present climate change crisis. As a result, their children and grandchildren are less able to enjoy that “indoor-outdoor” lifestyle they once celebrated due to rising temperatures, the depleting ozone layer, and weather extremes. Large - 9 x 14 x 4 inches $160 Med - 14 x 5 x 3 inches $140 Small - 7 x 7 x 3 inches $100 Set = $375
Materials and Process:: Handbuilt stoneware clay with grog additions then drybrushed with colour oxide washes and underglazes.

CA$200.00

Dimensions: 9 x 5 x 5
Inspiration:: These forms reflect the architectural ingenuity of traditional cultures of hotter climates. These people have engineered the design of their dwellings and gardens to maximize nature’s breezy ventilation system. Earthenware piercework bricks, tiles and ceramic forms are made from locally sourced, natural products and fired using lower-impact methods. Daily living routines centre around working with the higher and lower temperatures of each day and maximizing shade and natural cooling systems. An example of sustainability and living with the land. Large: 5 x 9 x 5 inches $120 Medium: 4 x 8 x 4 inches $100 Set = $200
Materials and Process:: Handbuilt using terracotta red stoneware.
Piñata Sky
Piñata Sky
Irene Ives
CA$70.00

Dimensions: 14 x 11 x 1
Inspiration:: Calles and callejons, or streets and alleys in Mexico, are often festooned with ribbons and flag bunting that cast flickering shadows on the scenes beneath them. This mesmerizing celebration of wind embellishes the skies, and surfaces of the cities, towns and barrios, or neighbourhoods with colour and dappled light, carrying the scent of coffee and traditional food from the cafes and food stands below. This photo captures a moment of movement on one street in Oaxaca, Mexico, and evokes the smells and sounds that are brought along with the breeze that ruffles the sky.
Materials and Process:: 8X10 photo printed on archival smooth hot press cotton fine art paper, floated between glass in 11X14 frame.
Smoke on the Water - Long Beach
Smoke on the Water - Long Beach
Karen Whyte
CA$2,150.00

Dimensions: 30 x 40 x 1.5
Inspiration:: Smoke from wildfires shrouded the south coast and Vancouver Island in late summer of 2020. Heat domes, fires and drought worsened every year, but it was 2020 that the impact of those fires really came home. 'Smoke on the Water' was inspired by the feelings of impending doom brought on by heavy smoke. And yet...children play joyfully in the surf at Long Beach.
Materials and Process:: acrylic on canvas
Patagonia Squall
Patagonia Squall
Michael Barr
CA$225.00

Dimensions: 8 x 12
Inspiration:: Patagonia is a place of extreme weather and stunning beauty. Viewed from Puerto Natales, Chile, this squall suddenly appeared over the distant Torres del Paine mountains. It was a gentle forewarning of what we were about to experience on our multi-day trek.
Materials and Process:: Watercolour
Bubble-net Buddies
Bubble-net Buddies
Elizabeth Ashworth
CA$50.00

Dimensions: 10 x 10 x 1.75
Inspiration:: This work uses both natural and human-made items (mussel shells, quilt batting) to represent an aerial view of humpback whales creating a spiral of air bubbles, also known as a bubble net. Whales work as a team to blow air bubbles to corral prey, like small fish and krill. Humpback numbers are rising and this cooperative method of using air to create a ‘net’ is one way whales survive, and thrive, as fish stocks recede.
Materials and Process:: Mussel shells and quilt batting glued on to an archival mat.

Dimensions: 20 x 16 x 1.5
Inspiration:: Seen as a shifting and destructive force that destroys everything in its path, sandstorms can also symbolize rebirth. Sometimes, metamorphosis involves breaking down the old self and letting go of the past. Like a storm reshaping the landscape, personal growth emerges from chaos and adversity. When the sand settles, clarity and new possibilities emerge.
Materials and Process:: Dolomitic lime, acrylic, pastel and pencil on raw canvas

Life in the Frame
Derek Kasper
CA$100.00

Dimensions: 10 x 8 x 0.5
Inspiration:: It is a little strange to contemplate, but of all the things required for life, the invisible air is the most critical. We cannot survive more than a minute or two without it! So, how can you depict an invisible substance in a medium like ceramics? Why, you can frame it!
Materials and Process:: Stoneware clay and glazes fired in oxidation
