Breathe Into Me: Stories Written in Smoke
Breathe Into Me: Stories Written in Smoke
Dyan Marie
CA$75.00

Dimensions: 84 x 11 x 0.1
Inspiration:: Breathe Into Me explores the ephemeral nature of air and memory through the act of smoking. The piece captures 35 recalled stories, shaping breath into a transient movement of air, emphasizing the atmosphere as both a physical and symbolic space where our experiences are suspended and fleeting. By framing smoke as gesture and inscription, the work engages with themes of impermanence, ritual, and the body’s interaction with the environment. The act of smoking—once a social ritual, now a transgressive act—becomes a means of marking presence, leaving an imprint in the atmosphere even as it disappears. Each curl of smoke represents the intersection of memory and breath, reflecting how something intangible carries the weight of personal histories. A meditation on the seen and unseen, Breathe Into Me considers how our place in the atmosphere is marked by the ephemeral traces of our lived moments.

CA$450.00

Dimensions: 24 x 24 x 1.5
Inspiration:: I find the storm maps taken from sattellites to be like beautiful moving abstract paintings with the colours corresponding to the temperatures and severity. I notice there are much larger areas of dark red, orange and blue signifying more potentially destructive storms and I am concerned about the effect warmer temperatures are having on the intensity of these extreme weather events.
Materials and Process:: Acrylic and mixed media on cradled board

CA$200.00

Dimensions: 8 x 10
Inspiration:: Mother and Child captures a moment suspended in time, displaying the gentle rhythms of nature and the quiet beauty of organic forms. This lumen print is made at the intersection of art and the natural environment, revealing the hidden potential of exploring atmospheric conditions as an integral part of creative expression. Winter seaweed was placed on photographic printing paper for two days, letting misty atmospheric conditions make a photogenic drawing to record the experience. By exposing this lumen print to a wintery rainy atmosphere for two days, nature influenced and shaped the outcome, resulting in subtle transitions between colours that suggest movement and fluidity.

Dimensions: 14 x 11
Inspiration:: Inspired by the passage of a fierce storm and the sun’s gentle return, 'Atmospheric Tranquility' records nature’s fleeting renaissance at the crossroads of chaos and peace. This lumen print embodies the fresh breath after the storm, where every particle hums with dormant energy and newfound clarity. This sacred alchemy presents a moment where art becomes a portal to an elemental dance inspired by earth, water and air.

Dimensions: 14 x 11
Inspiration:: The inspiration behind 'Purple Mist' stems from an ambiance thick with atmospheric qualities—a day characterized by persistent rain and a dense, enveloping atmosphere. This natural setting is captured with an intimacy that reflects the synergy between environment and art. The lumen print records atmospheric conditions, utilizing them as an intrinsic element of its creation and lending an ephemeral unique photogram. This process allows light to sculpt the image directly on the paper, bypassing the need for a camera. As a result, the print embodies an organic synthesis of realism and abstraction, where shadow and light are the primary architects of form.

Dimensions: 64 x 36
Inspiration:: Dust is with us everywhere in the air - even in space. Looking at dust motes under the microscope, I was inspired to create this transparent hanging featuring red dust which is so common in many parts of the world. I used transparent organza as my medium because of its airy qualities.

CA$250.00

Dimensions: 28 x 22 x 0.5
Inspiration:: In the heart of the Celtic Shipyard, I find myself enveloped by the bracing sea air, where each breath becomes a connection to the elements. The water reminds me that air is a master sculptor of the Earth, shaping and transforming all within its reach. My gaze comes to focus on the ship's hull, resting just at the play of the waterline, where water and air have danced upon the steel. Their collaboration are abstract compositions from stem to stern as restoration reveals the decades of interplay between these element layer on layer.

Dimensions: 22 x 28 x 0.5
Inspiration:: In embrace of early morning air by the tidal estuary, the sun washing its colours upon the coiled steel, its light transforming the scene I stop and take it all in. The air, alive with purpose, has been transforming the elements that hold these shapes in place. It is a tranquil scene but can imagine the pulsating vitality as the air breathes new life, new forms onto the surfaces of the awakening steel.

Inspiration:: As I reflect on the role of art in the face of climate change, I am so aware of how air, an invisible entity, can be so essential to all life on this planet. It seems to me that humans will continue to take breathing in air as a given until it is not. My work is a celebration of the gift of air.

Dimensions: 16 x 16 x 1.5
Inspiration:: Something hopeful - plants produce breathable oxygen by utilizing carbon dioxide in the air. They also filter the air by removing pollutants like benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene, which sound like things we definitely want removed, so let's plant more plants and cut down less trees. Pass it on......

CA$150.00

Dimensions: 8 x 8 x 1
Inspiration:: Stand in the middle of any garden and you’ll be in the generous company of bees. It’s been said that the bumblebee shouldn’t be able to fly, but the bumblebee doesn't know that. They appear to effortlessly hover in mid-air, yet this illusion requires them to create a tornado of air by rapidly twisting their wings. It is far from effortless – their struggle to both hover and survive in air that is being rapidly polluted by humans. Air pollution can harm bees in many ways, including making it harder for them to find food, damaging their immune systems, and reducing their ability to learn and remember.
Materials and Process:: Lino block print, oil inks on cotton paper

Angela Menzies
CA$150.00

Dimensions: 8 x 8 x 1
Inspiration:: Moon-gazing walks through our garden can bring us face to face with flitting, furry, fat bellied hawkmoths. Traditionally seen as omens of death, the death's-head hawkmoth is an important pollinator of night blooming plants. And hawkmoths are masters of the air! Flying fast, they can dart, hover, fly backwards, and perform inspirational aerobatics. Air pollution changes the smell of flowers, making it harder for moths and other pollinators to find them, which can impact the natural ecosystems we depend on.

Dimensions: 24 x 36 x 1.5
Inspiration:: The current temperature of our world is rising. Climate change, yes indeed. Also our internal climate is melting our mental health. It is time, more than ever, to live in the moment. So, let’s go fly a kite. Let’s breathe in the fresh air and withdraw from the craziness of social media and terror.
Materials and Process:: Acrylic paint. I do love texture. So I bring movement into the beautiful air with gold and brushstrokes.
