The cement breeze block is a ubiquitous symbol of the mid-century modern aesthetic. Its form is a celebration of negative space and their tile-like geometric motifs provided the breezy privacy of the much celebrated indoor-outdoor lifestyle that emerged after WWII. While creating these nostalgic forms, I was also reminded that the generations that used them in their carports, gardens, breezeways and patios, are the same ones that are responsible for the greatest level of industry, consumerism and use of carbon-emitting fuels in history, leading to our present climate change crisis. As a result, their children and grandchildren are less able to enjoy that “indoor-outdoor” lifestyle they once celebrated due to rising temperatures, the depleting ozone layer, and weather extremes.
