Michael Barr

I have been painting with watercolours intermittently my whole life. I am largely self-taught building on some schooling early, augmented by occasional courses or lessons. My profession as a Conservation Biologist continually situated me in amazing landscapes and conditioned me to observe and become intimate with my surroundings. Painting became a creative way to express these connections. Now retired, I have more time to immerse myself in this creative space.

Statement

The natural world puts on a show every day. Often ordinary and unnoticed, extraordinary moments may unexpectedly appear. For me, big skies are the most pronounced and inspiring on nature's stage. With my 'head in the clouds', I've been recently experimenting with different ways to represent skies with watercolours. I'm amazed how magically clouds appear on the paper; sometimes where you add paint, and others, in the spaces between. Skies; the ultimate medium of AIR.
